First aquarium checklist: tank, filter and compatibility
First aquarium checklist. Use this guide to narrow the choice and check the exact listing before ordering. We describe buying checks, not a hands-on test or a guarantee for every pet.
Plan the aquarium before buying parts
Start with the species you intend to keep and research its space, temperature and water requirements with a qualified aquatic specialist. A decorative bowl or a starter label does not establish suitability for every fish. Avoid filling a cart with attractive parts before confirming a coherent setup.
Measure the tank and its location
Check tank dimensions and capacity, then the support surface and access for maintenance. Allow room for cables, hoses and opening lids. A stand must be suitable for the filled setup, not just the empty glass tank. This guide does not calculate the load capacity of your furniture or certify a homemade support.
Compare filters by the exact specifications
Confirm the tank-size guidance, flow rate, hose sizes and electrical requirements for the model. A replacement media kit may fit only particular filter models. The same brand name does not make all cartridges interchangeable. Look for the exact model numbers and the contents of the pack before comparing prices.
Check heaters, lights and other powered equipment
Match each device to your intended setup and follow its electrical and installation instructions. Check voltage and the supplied plug, controller and mounting accessories. Do not assume a heater wattage suits every tank in the same broad size category. Arrange cables according to manufacturer safety guidance and keep access to power controls.
Budget for routine maintenance
Include appropriate testing and cleaning supplies, replacement media and species-appropriate food in your planning. New systems need suitable preparation and monitoring; this article does not replace species-specific guidance or prescribe chemical doses. Follow the label of any water treatment and never infer a dose from a different brand.
Use a written compatibility list
Record tank, filter, cartridge, heater and light model numbers. Compare pumps and filters, heaters and lights. Ask about unclear model references before ordering rather than assuming that two similar photos show interchangeable parts.
