Cat Litter Types Explained: Clumping, Crystal, Pine and More
Litter is the most-repurchased cat product there is, and the differences between types are real. Here is what each one actually does well.
Clumping clay: the default for a reason
Forms solid scoopable clumps, controls odor well and costs the least per month. Downsides: dust (look for "low dust" formulas) and weight. If your cat has no complaints, this is the practical choice.
Crystal (silica)
Absorbs moisture and dehydrates waste, needs changing less often, very low dust. Costs more upfront and some cats dislike the texture under their paws.
Pine, paper and corn
- Pine: natural smell, biodegradable, light — but does not clump as firmly.
- Paper: the vet favorite after surgery (no dust in wounds); poor odor control long-term.
- Corn and walnut: clumping plant-based middle ground; keep it dry to avoid pantry moths.
The two rules that matter more than the litter
One box per cat plus one spare, and scoop daily. Most "my cat stopped using the box" stories are a box problem, not a litter problem: too small, too dirty, or a covered box the cat never chose.
