Prepare a small, useful first setup
You do not need every item in the pet store on the first day. Plan sleeping, feeding, cleaning, supervised play and walks around your puppy’s current size and the advice from its veterinary team. A puppy-shop label is a browsing aid, not proof that every product is suitable for every age.
Sleeping and household access
Measure the intended resting area and compare the bed’s usable sleeping space rather than only the outer size. Check washing instructions and whether a cover is removable. If considering a gate or crate, check opening dimensions, adjustment ranges and the maker’s intended use. Do not rely on a decorative photo to judge usable space.
Food and bowls
Confirm the exact food and life-stage label with the person or professional already caring for the puppy. A new-home checklist does not prescribe a feeding amount or a sudden diet change. Compare bowl size, material, cleaning method and included pieces. Raised, slow-feeding and ordinary bowls have different designs; none is automatically appropriate for every puppy.
Walking and identification

Cleaning and supervised play
Check the size and absorbency details of training pads and follow the directions of any cleaning product. For toys, check the maker’s age and size guidance and inspect for loose or damaged parts. A heartbeat plush may be one optional comfort item, not a guaranteed solution to anxiety or sleeping difficulties; follow its battery or heat-pack instructions.
A short final checklist
Record dimensions, package counts and the supplies already included by the breeder, rescue or previous carer. Buy only the next useful items, then reassess as the puppy grows. Compare beds, walking equipment and housebreaking supplies. Ask before ordering if the exact size or contents are unclear.
